Position: Laundry Attendant Part-time

Job Summary

The individual in this position is responsible for the cleanliness of all linens and garments in the hotel, properly storing the linens and garments, operating the equipment needed to complete all tasks, and communicating with fellow coworkers and management.  In addition, the individual in this position is responsible for maintaining the laundry room and all the equipment.  Other responsibilities may be assigned by the Laundry Supervisor or Housekeeping Manager at any time.

Responsibilities and Duties

The responsibilities and duties of the laundry attendant include:

  • Sorting the laundry chute
  • Loading and unloading the washing machines and dryers
  • Transferring wet linens and garments to dryers
  • Operating and setting washing machines to the proper wash cycles and temperatures based on the linen and garment
  • Operating and setting dryers to proper temperatures based on the linen and garment
  • Sorting out towels and wash clothes for folding
  • Laying out bed sheets and table linen for folding
  • Operating the mangle machine for certain linens
  • Trimming strings from linen
  • Folding and storing linens and garments to hotel standards
  • Ensuring all linen and garment storage areas are properly labeled
  • Sweeping, vacuuming, and mopping the laundry room
  • Wiping down the outsides of all machines and equipment
  • Cleaning wash pit grate, washing machine vents, and dryer vents
  • Communicating with the Maintenance Department on equipment failure
  • Other responsibilities and duties as assigned

Job Context

The laundry attendant spends the majority of the work shift in a standing position.  Physical demands involve walking, bending, twisting, pulling, pushing, lifting, and carrying.  Must be able to lift, carry, push and pull a minimum of 30 lbs.  The workday is spent indoors in a varied climate-controlled room with three other coworkers.  The noise level can range from low to high.  The Northern Hotel is open 24 hours per day, seven days per week, and all holidays.  Shift hours for the laundry department include 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  Employees working six or more hours in one shift will receive a paid half hour lunch.  Weekend and holiday work may be required for this position, with possible overtime occurring.  Stress is usually low, but can become high when dealing with an influx of job responsibilities and duties.

Job Specifications

Upon hire, the laundry attendant must:

  • Have commercial laundry experience (preferred, but not required)
  • Be able to stand, bend, twist, and lift for long periods of time
  • Be able to perform tasks in a safe and productive manner
  • Have good communication skills
  • Have customer service skills
  • Have an eye for detail
  • Be able to problem solve
  • Have the ability to multitask and handle high-pressure situations
  • Have a willingness to learn

After hire, the laundry attendant must:

  • Learn and understand the expectations of the hotel (policies and procedures)
  • Learn how to properly use the mangle machine, washing machines, dryers, and helping hand folder
  • Learn how to wash, dry, fold, mangle, and store linens and garments
  • Learn and understand how to properly handle and maintain the laundry chemicals
